Forest River reissuing the classic Shasta Airflyte

Consider this post the first of several over the coming weeks and months to introduce you to the new Shasta Airflyte, produced by Shasta’s manufacturer, Forest River. Even though I use the word “new”, the new Airflyte will look anything but new. In fact, it will use a nearly exact blueprint from the 1961, although it will comply with RVIA specs. The Airflyte will have a limited production run of just under 2,000 units and should be available later in 2014. And this Airflyte will be a far cry from the Airflyte that Coachmen RV brought back in 2009, which happened to be featured in the very first post of this blog back in 2011: http://smalltrailerenthusiast.com/2011/09/07/a-tale-of-two-shastas/

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be privvy to some inside info on the Airflyte, courtesy of Rusty Eckstein, vice president of Mount Comfort RV, a dealer that will be carrying the Airflyte. We’ll have more info including a lot of photos, specs and even some video from the factory in Elkhart. But for now, here are two photos from the factory on the assembly line to whet your appetite. More to come!

Very interested in this….how many will it sleep? Will it have a full bath?

  2. Karla jones

I want one! When and how much?

  3. These are designed to be extremely accurate to the original 1961 run. In 1961, Shasta was the #1 selling trailer in the country and did not have a bathroom. It instead had a closet that could have a Port-A-Potty set inside it. The new Shasta Airflytes will feature an all-in-one bathroom with a toilet and shower in place of the closet to meet the desires of today’s campers. We will be taking a road trip next week to the Shasta plant to speak with the president of the company as well as get some detailed photos and videos of the first two prototypes off the production line. We will be posting these to our website at http://www.MountComfortRV.com/–videos You can also follow us on Facebook http://www.Facebook.com/MtComfortRV and Twitter @MountComfortRV and YouTube http://www.youtube.com/MountComfortRV as we will be continually updating these mediums as we get more information. Stay tuned! Along with SmallTrailerEnthusiast.com, we have some really cool stuff coming!

  4. This should be less than $15,000 and will be available at Mount Comfort RV in Greenfield, Indiana on I-70 just East of Indianapolis. No word yet on a release date, however we will be at the factory next week taking MANY more photos of the prototypes. I have setup a page where you can view our progress on our website as well as see more photos right now. http://www.mountcomfortrv.com/default.asp?page=xInventoryDetail&id=787216&p=1&s=Year&d=D&sq=shasta Please follow us on Facebook and YouTube at the links I posted on my other comment to stay in the loop as we will be updating those pages with more info regularly as we receive it.

VERY interested! Keep us posted. Available in NC?

Weight? looking for under 3000 lbs dry weight, and more than a wet bath if at all possible. Is absolutely darling – LOVE the “car” seats for the dinette – like that so much better than cloth! will keep tabs on this!!

    • Kay, there are tentatively 2 floorplans that will be built, both replicas of the original. The originals had no bathroom at all. They only had a closet with an optional Port-a-Potty. So, the all-in-one bathroom is an upgrade. We will have more info on weight and pricing in the weeks to come.

  7. kay

p.s. oh, could you make one floorplan with a queenbed? that’s all we need!

  8. Donna Clawson

I want to order one. Sea foam. How do I do it? I don’t want to miss this!! Any negatives to this reissued Shasta ?

    • The only dealership I know of for sure that will carry it is Mount Comfort RV in Greenfield, Indiana just east of Indianapolis. I am sure there will be others around the country eventually.

Donna, we will be at the Shasta plant later this week where we will be getting more information, taking more photographs, and creating a detailed video. At this time we should learn more about weights, options, price and availability. In the mean time, I would suggest getting in touch with Mount Comfort RV at 317.898.6676 as they are currently compiling a list of those interested in this new Airflyte. Those on this list will have the first opportunity at ordering this new classic. You can also check out more photos at http://bit.ly/1pV06ny which is where we will be posting the additional information as it becomes available.

Ahaha. I remember my aunt and uncle had one of these. We camped in the desert– it was wonderful, and started my life-long love of trailers.

Rusty, is the deposit $250 for one of these? I think someone else ordered from your place and posted that in the trailer forum. I heard that you can order now from some dealers but the dealer in my state said after Sept 8?

    • AJ, we put in an order for A LOT of these on Tuesday (most of them already sold). They are expected to start building the trailers at the beginning of September. The earlier the orders get in, the sooner they will be built. I am estimating we will receive our first orders at our dealership around the first of October. Remember though, this is a limited build of 1,941 and they will eventually run out. There are a lot of untrue rumors going around the internet about these trailers. I can’t speak for those, but all the information on our website here: http://bit.ly/1pV06ny has come from Mark Lucas, the president of Shasta. To answer the other part of your question, we were taking $500 to secure pre-orders and guarantee a production slot. We typically get a 20% down payment to special order a trailer for a customer. We would be happy to speak with you more about this. If we can answer any more specific questions for you or get one on order, please feel free to contact one of our product experts at (800) 899-6676.

I just ordered and put my deposit on my new Shasta in seafoam green from Scott Mohr @ Mt Comfort RV [smohr@mountcomfortrv.com]. I am looking forward to a October delivery. He is a really nice guy and addressed all of my questions. (Other dealers are saying they won’t know anything until a show in Sept? With only 1961 models made…there is a chance that these will be all gone by then.) He put the deal together quickly and over the phone with email follow up. He can be reached at (317) 898-6676. More pictures are available online at http://www.mountcomfortrv.com/New-Inventory-2015-Shasta-Airflyte-16-Greenfield-Indiana-787216 He can also hook you up with camping nearby when you pickup your new camper. Happy Glamping! Tell him that Amy sent you. =)

My wife and I are thinking about ordering one of these trailers, but we’ve got to determine where exactly we will store it. I haven’t been able to find anywhere the approximate height of the trailer. Does anyone have this information? Thanks!

  16. Our RV dealership , RV Travel World of Sacramento, just signed up last week to be the Northern California dealer for the Shasta Airflytes. We will only have a limited number available, and based on the response that we have already gotten, we expect them to go very fast. We are currently accepting a $500.00 deposit from anyone in our region who would like to reserve one of these terrific little trailers. If you would like to be added to the list, or if you have any questions, please call our Sales Department at (916)392-1872, or you can email me at “phil@rvtravelworld.com”.

      Phil,
Thanks for taking our deposit! My wife Cathy, and I are very excited about taking delivery of our Sea Foam Green Airflyte 19! Hope to talk to you soon.

  17. Just wanted to give some feedback about what color is winning the race! So far sea foam green is at our dealership, about 2 to 1 over red. I was thinking red would be winning, I still think red May catch up. We have open slots on all colors available and can ship them anywhere in US and canada

I read in an article somewhere that the 19′ will have a hammock over the L-shaped gaucho. Is that correct?

  22. Barbara

Is there a 2nd floor plan with a queen bed? or a bed that can stay made out in addition to the dinette?

  23. Lane

    Rusty.

If you are in contact with Shasta, please ask about the tongue area on the 19? From the photos of the 16 there seems to be very little room to attach any type of sway control or weight distribution hitch? On the 16 it may not be an issue, but on the 19 I would feel more comfortable if I had some type of sway controller or weight distribution with sway control.from the pictures of the 16 there appears to be very little room for a thing of the tongue area because of the propane power cord and breakaway switch? Please talk to shut the if you’re able. Thank you.

I’m looking to build a shasta frame for a clubhouse version for my kids. Outside decor will be recreated from paint and it will be kept in the garage. Are there any basic plans I can use to get all the sides the right shape and the windows in the right spots? I’m looking for a scaled down version too, probably no longer than 10 feet x 6 feet
