Teal Camper jumps the Shark (Tank)

After an article about the Teal Camper appeared on the gizmag.com web site in May, things have been jumping on the Teal website. Once other blogs and websites picked up on the gizmag.com story, Teal’s website went from an average of 100 visitors a day to over 4,000, introducing a lot of new people to Larry Drake’s innovative modular camper, which we introduced to many of you last November.

Several of the readers contacted Drake, encouraging him to submit an application to the ABC reality show “Shark Tank”, in an effort to take Teal to the next level. “Shark Tank” is a reality show where budding entrepreneurs pitch their ideas and products to a panel of millionaire investors in the hopes one of them will “bite” and invest in the contestant’s venture.

Drake thought about it, but since he figured his chances were slim, he gave up on the idea. That is, until a producer at “Shark Tank” contacted him after reading about Teal from the gizmag.com story. Upon agreeing to review the requirements, Drake determined they were more interested in a reality show and less interested in helping entrepreneurs.

“What showed up in my in-basket was a contract a mile long that was obviously drawn up by legal sharks who had far more interest in furthering ABC’s interests than protecting the entrepreneur.” He goes on to say, “After a couple of phone conversations with the producers, I was convinced that Shark Tank is all about “good” television and not necessarily entrepreneur opportunity.  Reality TV, it is not what it appears to be.”

Drake will now forge ahead with Teal Camper without the aid of reality TV. “With all the interest that has been generated, multiple opportunities have surfaced.  We are exploring a host of options regarding both the US and international market.  Finding the right fit for the best chance of success is a challenge.”

Drake hopes to finalize the direction of Teal in the coming months.

Relay For Life review

When we left you last week, we were on the verge of participating in our first Relay For Life. Friday after work, we stopped by the relay venue to get an idea where our team’s site was and where we’d park our Scotty for the weekend. The officers of the Speedway Police Department did a fine job of leaving us a nice spot between the pop-up awnings and tent to park for the weekend. We returned a couple of hours later to set up shop. There was one other participant there for the evening who was providing security for the venue, since most of the 35+ teams had a tent and/or awnings set up, but no one else was camped out Friday night.

With nothing much to do after getting our site set up, we decided to head down to Sam’s Club to pick up a memory foam mattress topper for the Scotty, since we had a little extra in our camping budget and have meant to get one for a while. Wow, what a difference that 2 1/2″ of foam did for my sleep! Look for a “Gadget Review” on that later. After a late night walk over to Speedway’s Main Street for some frozen yogurt at Yogulatte, we called it a night, as we knew we’d need a lot of rest prior to the Relay.

At 6am, we were up & ready to go. Speedway officer Rod Ferguson was the first to show up with some ice for the massive coolers holding a massive amount of liquids for our team and for those participants wishing to buy for a small donation to the Relay. Officer Ferguson was quite impressed with the Scotty and after giving him the grand tour, he was more than happy to oblige with a small request I had for a photo…

The Relay began shortly after 10am Saturday and that’s when the fun began. I didn’t know what to expect when I signed up with my wife to do this, but I’m sure glad I did. It had a festival atmosphere to it, and with Speedway being a town of just over 12,000 residents, it wasn’t often you didn’t see someone you knew. The Speedway PD team poked a little fun at themselves with the name of their tent where we served up some milk and legendary Long’s donuts in the morning and some grillable meats in the afternoon.

Every hour there was something going on while the hundreds of walkers were mobile. Our group was busy selling food & drink, as well as “arresting” unsuspecting participants who were issued “warrants” for $5 by friends & family members. As each criminal was found, they were brought back to our site in handcuffs by one of Speedway’s finest and thrown in the Speedway Town Jail where they stayed until $5 bail was posted. It was a HUGE hit and our officers couldn’t keep up with the number of warrants issued.

As sunlight diminished for the day, the number of walkers didn’t. It created a rush of diners looking for more hotdogs, burgers, and brats we had on the grill. Luminarias were lit in memory of loved ones who either lost their fight to cancer or were fighting it. The hundreds of luminarias along the 2 tenths of a mile course had the names of those loved ones on them, as well as personal messages to them. There were a lot of emotional moments Saturday night, from the lap the cancer survivors took together to the solemn end of the Luminaria Ceremony where everyone shut down their campsite lights and watched as hundreds walked along the path of luminarias as a bagpipe player played “Amazing Grace”.

I managed to stay up the whole night. Everyone on our team either went home for a few hours of sleep, or in my wife’s case, found slumber in the Scotty. I found I needed a shot of 5 Hour Energy around 2:30am to keep me awake, which was my goal,  in honor of those who are in a fight for their lives who know that cancer never sleeps. I ended up walking nearly 2 hours off & on throughout the night (a little less than 4 miles), and decided to call it quits just before sunrise.

We started packing up shortly after 8am and after the closing ceremonies at 9am, we were on our way for the long one mile trek back home. The Speedway Relay For Life (at last count) brought in over $65,000, which was a record for this event. I can’t tell you what a fulfilling experience it was to participate in the Relay. As my father has battled prostate and bladder cancer for the past 10 years (doing well right now!), this event was personal for me, as it was for my wife, whose mother has battled breast cancer over the years. Any of you reading this who’ve participated in a Relay For Life know firsthand what an emotional event it is. And if you’ve never participated, I highly encourage you to check out the Relay For Life website and join a team or start one of your own in your area. You’ll walk away from it with a whole new perspective on life.

Relay For Life

This weekend marks the annual American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life in the Town of Speedway, Indiana. This will mark the first time my wife and I will participate in this rapidly growing event.

As members of the Speedway Police Department‘s citizens academy, we’re joining the relay team consisting of officers of the department. Since the relay is a 24 hour walk at a local park, the various teams set up campsites on the grounds, meant to serve as a home base where they can sit, sleep, eat, and socialize with their fellow teammates. As residents of Speedway grateful to our teammates who put their lives on the line every day for us, we’re upgrading their campsite this year by offering up our Serro Scotty as home base for the department’s team. So instead of the pop-up tents and sleeping bags, they’ll have an air conditioned oasis to crash for what is expected to be a warm weekend in the mid 80’s.

This promises to be one of the best camping trips we’ve had, although our campsite is just a mile away from home. Cancer is a 400lbs gorilla that has likely affected all of us in one way or another. If you’d like to participate by a modest donation to our team, we’d really appreciate the gesture. Donations big or small can be made even after the event. Just follow the link here to our team’s page. I’ll have a full report later this weekend following the event.

Thanks for your support of this event and as always, your support of The Small Trailer Enthusiast.

Gadget Review: The BAL Light Trailer Tire Leveler

It wasn’t long after we bought a 2010 T@B in September 2009 that we started to buy stuff to go along with it. At the suggestion of more than one fellow T@B owner, one of those things we purchased was the BAL Light Trailer Tire Leveler.

Designed for single axle trailers with either 13″, 14″ and most 15″ wheels, the BAL leveler eliminates the need for leveling blocks to achieve your side to side leveling. It’s a breeze to use and is probably my favorite accessory we’ve purchased. Just slide it under the tire on the side that needs lifting, place the end of the threaded adjusting rod in the slot on the bottom plate, and then just starting cranking it up with the ratchet that comes along with it until you get it level. There’s a nice tutorial here on YouTube:

When we sold our T@B in 2010, we let a few of our accessories we bought for it go with the trailer…but not our BAL leveler! It’s worked just as well with our much heavier Serro Scotty (2500 lbs compared to the T@B’s 1600 lbs).

One word of caution though. I’ve found the BAL doesn’t work well when parked on grass. I found some difficulty (if not just impossible) in sliding it under the tire when parked on grass, but there were no problems encountered on gravel or hard surface campsite pads.

I’ve read on a few RV forums where some folks don’t like the BAL because of its bulk and how it takes up space. In my opinion, it’s a small price to pay for a handy tool. As for storage, I’ve read where more than one owner has purchased a typical pizza delivery bag and used it to store the BAL in, since it does have some grease on the threaded rod which can get things a little messy if left in the bed of your truck, or other tow vehicle of choice.

We purchased our BAL from Amazon.com in late 2009. We paid about $55 for it then, but today they go for around $80. However, those prices tend to fluctuate,  so you may pay less than the current $80 when you’re ready to get one. And get one you should!

Paradise Coast RV set to debut June 4

Benton Harbor, Michigan based Paradise Coast RV is set to debut the first of its line of retro travel trailers Monday, June 4 at the Mahogany Outfitters Classic Boat and Auto Museum cruise-in in Cassopolis, Michigan.  A follow-up showing will be Wednesday, June 6 at the Niles, Michigan Kar Club cruise-in.

The first model Paradise Coast is putting out is the 143RKB “Silver Beach”, which checks in at 17′ overall length with an impressive 7′ interior headroom, thanks in part to arched ceiling construction. One eye catching feature that I don’t recall seeing on modern travel trailers of any size is a split front window.

We’ll be talking more about Paradise Coast in depth in the weeks to come, but if you’re in the southwest Michigan or northern Indiana area, be sure to stop by one of these two events Monday or Wednesday.

SylvanSport GO giveaway ends May 31

Pop-up camper maker SylvanSport is offering up one of their multifunctional GO campers to a lucky winner who can, in 250 words or less, describe their ultimate adventure in a GO and how they’d promote it.

The GO is a camper by nature, but has many other useful benefits, including hauling loads, bicycles, ATVs, and small watercraft. Due to its aluminum construction, the GO is extremely lightweight (840 lbs) which means it can be hauled by most 4 cylinder cars.

The top three essays will receive thousands of dollars in outdoor gear. The best essay of the three gets the gear plus a new GO, total value well over $10,000. Essay entries for the contest end May 31, 2012 and can be entered via their web site.

Expanding our reach

Since I started this blog back in September, I’ve focused writing about hard sided trailers less than 20′ in length. The reason behind that is because that is mainly where my interest lies. Yes, I’ve excluded pop-up trailers from the discussion simply because I’ve never had any experience and interest in them.

However, I’m going to work on expanding the field of discussion on the blog and include pop-ups in the mix. Hopefully in the process, I can educate myself on them while creating a better appreciation for them. I’ve had some inquiries from some pop-up manufacturers about talking about their particular brand. After thinking it over, I decided why not?

So in the weeks to come, I’ll be adding some pop-ups to the “Manufacturers” page of this site. I may end up categorizing them separately, or may even create separate categories for travel trailers, teardrops, and pop-ups for ease of use.

Bear with me as I wade through the unknown. And if you’re a pop-up devotee and have a brand that’s a favorite of yours, let me know and I’ll be sure to put it on the list as well.

Redesigned Serro Scotty Sportsman debut set

The weekend of May 11-13 marks the debut of the newly redesigned Serro Scotty Sportsman. It is scheduled to be introduced in Hermitage, Pennsylvania at the Shenango Valley Mall RV Show. The look of the new Sportsman has been kept under wraps, so what it will look like is known by just a handful of folks.

The 2007 Sportsman was the first model reintroduced by Serro Scotty Worldwide when it was formed in 2006. It had a more rounded look to the bodies, similar to the Sportsmans of the original era Serro Scottys of the 1960’s.

That lasted about a year. When production moved from Yoder Toder to Sierra Motor Corporation in 2008, a new body style for the Sportsman came with it, which was a little taller and had more of a squared look to it when compared to the 2007.

When I talked to Serro Scotty Worldwide’s Bill Kerola in December, he told me the new Sportsman would go back to a rounded look, but I suspect it will look different from the 2007 version. He mentioned it will have hints to the former Serro Scotty Pup, but a little larger.

If all the stars align during my return trip from the east coast this coming week, I hope to be able to come through Hermitage and get a first hand look at the show.

The Shenango Valley Mall is located at 3303 East State Street, Hermitage, PA. The show will be held outside the mall. Admission is free and hours are Friday: 12 Noon – 8:00 PM; Saturday: 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM; Sunday: 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Campground Review: Louisville South KOA

We generally make it a habit of supporting state parks when it comes to our camping adventures. Generally the sites are are more spread out and the scenery is a little nicer compared to most RV parks. However, recently we had the opportunity to meet up with some fellow small trailerites at the Louisville South KOA in Louisville, Kentucky, organized by two former T@B owners, Ken & Bonnie Pleat. The Pleats are in their second season of workamping, and the Louisville South KOA is their summer “job” for 2012.

Up until our stay at the Louisville South KOA, we had stayed in just one RV park. We typically wouldn’t stay at a KOA due to their higher cost and close campsites, but since this was a special circumstance, we gladly decided to attend.

After checking in at the office, I was rather surprised to find a gentleman was waiting in a golf cart next to my truck & trailer waiting to escort me to my site. THAT was a first! Sure, I could’ve found my site on my own, but it was still a nice little perk.

As predicted, the sites were close together, but since we were among friends, I had no complaints. And any time I get a site that’s level from side to side, it’s worthy of praise.

The Louisville South KOA offers sites for just about any camping need, from tents through 40′-plus motorhomes. Don’t have a tent, camper, or motorhome? No worries, they also offer a nice selection of Kamping Kabins.

Other amenities include hiking trails, a heated swimming pool, miniature golf, a well-stocked store (with reasonable prices as well), and outdoor movies during the summer months. While we were there, the popular attraction for the kids camping there was the Jumping Pillow. These can be found at an increasing number of KOAs throughout the U.S., and the one at the Louisville South KOA was getting a pretty good workout.

And if your “kids” happen to be of the four-legged variety, there’s even a playground for them too:

After our experience at the Louisville South KOA, we plan on giving some more KOAs a try. With us camping with our 14 month old grandson on a somewhat regular basis, we like the family-oriented activities KOAs…and other RV parks for that matter…have to offer compared to camping at state parks. And to help offset the higher costs at KOAs, they offer a discount card where you save 10% off your campsite fees and accumulate points at the same time which you can use for credit on future campsite fees.

Overall, our experience at the Louisville South KOA was a good one. The employees there treated us well, the facilities were well kept, the comfort stations were clean, and there was enough to do to keep us occupied. It was everything I expected a KOA to provide and more. Hope your experience there gives you the same.

Go RVing Giving Away 2012 Lance Travel Trailer

Go RVing will be giving away a 2012 Lance 1685 travel trailer as part of their Ultimate Country Music RV Giveaway this spring. Entries can be made daily up until April 16, 2012 at the GAC (Great American Country) web site. The grand prize includes the Lance as well as two roundtrip tickets to Nashville, Tennessee including a six-night hotel stay for the CMA Music Festival in June. Anyone else find it slightly humorous they’re giving away a trailer and a separate trip to Nashville where you stay in your…..hotel room?

(image courtesy Go RVing — tow vehicle not included)

Nevertheless, the Lance should serve its future owner well, as the brand is one of the better built units on the market today. The Lance 1685 is a tick over 20′ long and weighs just under 3500 lbs. It comes with a slide out for the dinette, queen bed, dual propane tanks, and a lot more. And if you’re the one who wins it, we want to know!
